Hubble-Webb Comparison

The recently released Webb telescope images look nice, but it's hard to appreciate what they are without something to compare them to. The image above is a section of the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster as imaged by the Hubble space telescope in 2017. When you move your mouse over the image, the new version from the Webb telescope is shown. Images from the Hubble telescope were an astonishing improvement over ground-based telescope images when they were first seen, and the Webb telescope is an equally great step up from Hubble, both in terms of "reach" (the faintest objects visible) and resolution (sharpness). Click the image above for a larger blinking version (good for phone & tablet users), along with non-blinking individual images.
